NEU Battery Materials and GRST announce collaboration agreement to drive clean and sustainable battery manufacturing and recycling Developing a lower cost of production and recycling together through cross-functional product testing.

Singapore, 27 May 2024 - NEU Battery Materials and GRST have entered into a strategic collaboration to accelerate the commercialisation of lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) battery recycling. Together, the partners seek to drive the adoption of sustainable energy storage solutions, and develop per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS)-free products through a joint effort that leverages NEU Battery Materials' clean recycling technology.

About GRST

GRST is a technology company with strong research capabilities in water-based manufacturing and recycling solutions of lithium-ion batteries. Our award-winning, patented WATMAR³ technology creates high-performance lithium-ion batteries at lower costs and lower GHG emissions. For more information, please visit grst.com

A pioneer in the battery recycling space, NEU Battery Materials is a Singapore-based startup that has developed a patented electrochemical process to sustainably extract metals from spent lithium-ion batteries, especially those of the LFP variety. The firm now operates a pilot production plant in Singapore, where it recycles manufacturing scrap and end-of-life batteries from various regions and clients. Key investors and partners of the company include Temasek Foundation, SGInnovate, ComfortDelGro, SMRT, Se-cure Waste Management and the National University of Singapore.

Meanwhile, GRST (“Green Renewable Sustainable Technology”), the 2023 Earthshot Prize “Clean our Air” Category winner, has developed a cleaner lower cost way to produce and recycle lithium-ion batteries while significantly reducing carbon footprint during production and recycling. It now operates the first lithium-ion battery factory in the world using its patented technology in Zhejiang Province, China, and sells its products worldwide.

The partnership signifies a shared commitment to promote environmental stewardship and policies by co-developing innovative, sustainable products that are not only cleaner, but more economical to produce and recycle. The collaboration will be using GRST’s cathode scrap and NEU’s recycling process to extract battery grade lithium.

“This partnership creates new mutually beneficial business opportunities as we both support the manufacturing and recycling of LFP,” said Bryan Oh, CEO of NEU Battery Materials.

“I am thrilled to be partnering with NEU for the synergy that can be very impactful in LFP battery recycling,” said Justin Hung, CEO of GRST. “The economic and environmental benefits of GRST and NEU’s technology foster true circularity.”

Both NEU and GRST are committed to promoting sustainable development goals, such as the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The partnership will actively contributeto SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action) among others, by jointly driving for clean and sustainable recycling solutions and sustainable recyclable LFP manufacturing technologies.
